The Wild Beneath feels a little like a fable someone told me years ago—except I can’t remember the ending, and I’m beginning to suspect I wouldn’t trust the storyteller anyway.
Annie lives on a boat with her parents. Her father is the steady one, though he might have had a very different life as a doctor. Her mother struggles with her mental health, and the people in town are unkind about it. Annie’s grandmother lives on land, which sounds sensible to me at this point.
Annie also has a friend who seems to want more than friendship. Annie isn’t so sure. Then a tsunami comes, her parents go missing, and a strange boy named Walker turns up. I have questions, starting with: Who is Walker, and why does his arrival feel like the beginning of an old story?
Kelly Anderson talks about writing The Wild Beneath while working as a doctor, and how the story grew over six years.
